I had decided to head for Ringstead when I thought "what the heck" and continued on to Abbotsbury. The drizzle must have put a lot of people off as I got a spot almost in front of the carpark boardwalk (no hard shingle shuffling needed )
For some reason I'd read the tide times wrong and I'd missed HT by a couple of hours so prospects weren't bright.
Apart from finding a leak in an 'interesting' area of my floatie and making two cups of coffee, nothing much happened for an hour on either rod. The distance rod baits looked like something had been tugging at them so rather than blank I changed the pennel size to a 2/0, still with a lug/squid cocktail.
Almost straight away I got a Whiting of about ¾lb then a couple more around 1lb but nothing on the 'close-in' rod. I cast both rods out loaded up with lug/squid as far as I could go with my finest OTG (a thing of beauty in my eyes, if nobody else's) and put the kettle on for another brew when one of my rods gave an almighty "nod". Did I have a Cod ???
It was heavy and tugging well, not really fighting but felt Cod-like - my first of 2011. An anxious minute or two got it to the surf and out on the shingle and it sure looked like a Codling until I got close... It was another Whiting, but a good one
Not a record as it only weighed 2.2lb (2lb 3¼oz) and the Shore Record was over 4lb but it was by far the biggest I'd caught
The next half hour was dire, a couple more ¾lb Whiting, the leak in my floatie getting worse, and kicking over my fresh, steaming cup of coffee
So I did the sensible thing and packed up and headed home via the Dorchester Macdonalds for a coffee - is it me or have they changed their coffee? It didn't taste as good as it used to
So, still no Cod but I have caught my PB Whiting as compensation
