Bream Trip on "Sambe", Beer, Devon

I went out with a group of friends from the Chesil Beach forum for a Bream trip yesterday afternoon. We left from Beer village, not a regular charter boat port but home to a small fishing fleet. The trip was arranged out on local fisherman Kim Aplin's crab boat "Sambe" - no frills, or luxuries as it's a working boat, but Kim knows his marks.

The conditions were quite lumpy and the tide was at LW so fishing was a bit flat to start with, but Bream soon started arriving as the tide turned, my best fish of the day being a plump 2¾ lb Bream. The real story of the day though was the sheer number of species we caught in a short session - I started my tally with a Dragonet, then Dogfish, hordes of small Pout, some very large and plump Mackerel, Black Bream, etc. Other fish caught included; Scad, Ballan Wrasse, Cuckoo Wrasse, Plaice, Blenny, Red Gurnard and lots more Bream.

If the sea had been a bit calmer we could have probably have managed more species but with wind against tide things were a bit bouncy at times. Kim's cries of "Hang on lads!" were a regular feature as big swells hit us, and almost every time I reached across the engine cover for some bait we were hit by a rogue wave which knocked me sideways - luckily I was comfortably padded by the angler next to me who was unfortunately acting as my "human shock-absorber" (glad I'm not wearing his ribs this morning - sorry Richard)  Embarrassed

Kim moved us a bit nearer inshore to try and find calmer conditions and a few more Bream turned up, but eventually we turned back to the shore to see if the "Anchor Hotel" had run out of beer or not. It hadn't when we arrived but was looking very low on stock by the time we left Wink

In all a good day and I've got a freezer full of dogfish, bream, gurnard and mackerel, plus I had a top-up on my suntan Very Happy

Photo below: Sambe (boat on the left) just arriving to pick us up - at Beer they don't have a harbour, the boats are hauled up onto the beach by a winch at night and rolled back down into the sea next morning, so by the time we got back to shore at sunset we were hauled up in the boat onto dry land and just stepped out onto dry shingle. A very civilised way of disembarking Smile
